Charles, volunteer in Ghana at the age of 17

volunteer in Ghana

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog about the age limit of the volunteers in Ghana that we host at Moon&Star guesthouse. In this blog I remembered former Moon&Star volunteers. Some of them have a very special story, like Charles, who was 17 years old at the time. Here is his story.

Give yourself a break, reconnect with yourself and cut loose from your usual patterns at Moon&Star guesthouse.

Charles was only 17 years old yet came to volunteer in Ghana during his summer holidays. Charles was not an average 17 year old volunteering in Ghana, he did not want to improve the world. He especially wanted to learn and see what life abroad would be like when you are not on holiday. A 3 week experience was rather short though, but he was only 17 years old and also had to work a bit during his summer vacation.

Charles decided to quit taking his medication

It was a big step for Charles to come and for his mother it was very exciting to let him go. All the more so because Karel was normally on medication for ADHD. Together they had decided not to let him take anything during the summer vacation. Thanks to our personal guidance it felt safe enough for Charles’ mother to let him go.

During your stay at Moon&Star guesthouse you can be entirely yourself

Charles flourished as a volunteer in Ghana, learned to explore his interests here. He discovered that when he liked to do something, he could concentrate. He often talked about his dreams and wishes, which made him aware which course of study he wanted to follow when he returned home. He learned that he could be himself and that he has a lot to give.

After he came home, he never took his medication again. He started a new education at a ‘lower’ level, but did something he loved. He made long cool journeys, lived abroad for a period of time and worked on awesome projects.

Sustainability is the main focus of the volunteer program of Moon&Star guesthouse

According to our vision, voluntourism is sustainable tourism that allows the traveller to live, experience and immerse himself in a different culture on the basis of equality, so that there is no negative impact on the population of Banko and the projects we support in particular.

We listen to the local authorities, the people on the projects and their leaders. We do not undermine their authority, they know best what is needed.

What can you expect from us as a volunteer in Ghana?

Moon&Star guesthouse has an excellent volunteer program. We will guide you in a practical way before departure, have a 16 day online preparation program and pick you up from the airport. When we are in Banko we have an extensive program, with the daily activities, but also lots of fun trips and opportunities for conversations and evaluations.
